We were able to meet and hold some of the smaller animals at Taronga Zoo yesterday. They are very well taken care of, and Taronga provides educational classes for grade schools to come and learn about these animals. I will say, I have very mixed feelings about Zoos and I don’t feel that most animals are suited for them. For example, elephants. They are my favorite animal, and it pains me to see the largest of all of our land mammals trapped in a Zoo. There is no way to accommodate a typical habitat for them, or to allow them to roam the distances they do in the wild. However, the animals that we were able to interact with are very small, with large habitats similar to their own in the wild, and many had special needs/injuries that wouldn’t allow them to be in the wild safely. Those were the animals we spent time with, and I tried not to think about the four elephants inside. People are starting to change their outlook on Zoos…and currently, steps are being made to improve some of them. Still, I wonder how they might change in the future? Drastically? Currently, a battle is still being fought to remove Billy the elephant from the Los Angeles Zoo. Elephants are extremely social creatures who need space to roam freely, and Billy, the sole elephant at the Zoo has neither company or space. A $42-million dollar exhibit was passed to build a larger habitat for Billy. The argument stands that this is money our city doesn’t have to spend, especially on something that still won’t provide the adequate space for Billy or the future elephants they hope to house. A lawsuit has just been filed that could halt this construction. Animals don’t have a voice to fight for themselves. They are such beautiful creatures and it is amazing to watch shows like “Planet Earth” and witness the unbelievable qualities that they posses. It is hard, because we want to witness these qualities in person. Zoos provide this for those people who can’t travel to see these animals in their natural habitat. But still, is it right? When I told some people I was going to see the penguins at Phillip Island (which was a two hour bus ride from our hotel), they asked why I didn’t just go see them in the local Zoo. It was magical to see those penguins come out of the water and return to their nests. I wouldn’t have traded it to see them standing in a man-made exhibit at the Zoo. Again, I will say, I am conflicted. Luckily, at Taronga, the people who work with these animals love them very dearly and were very sweet to let us interact with them so closely.

Today, I was talking to my crush. I accidently said “my shoe’s friend” instead of “my friend’s shoe”. I thought he would think I was stupid but instead he replied saying “Maybe your shoe can be friends with mine?”. This made my day. No wonder I like him. MLIA
